RFID in the European horticultural sector

Container Centralen RFID tagged containers are identified with Nordic ID mobile computers.

In the future, Container Centralen’s plant and flower trolley, the CC Container, will be identified using RFID handhelds by Nordic ID.

The initial situation
Container Centralen, a Danish/Dutch company, currently manages a pool of approx. 3.5 million CC Containers used by more than 22,000 customers in their logistics processes. Together with IBM, Container Centralen has launched a Europe-wide RFID project for the horticultural industry.

The Solution
Implementation of RFID will optimise logistics processes in the horticultural supply chain, and link data about the products the CC Containers carry with the individual container. The RFID project will also ensure that the CC Container pool is protected, while preventing poor quality container copies from being sneaked into the pool.

The result
In future, the RFID tags affixed to the containers will be scanned at different points in the supply chain using Nordic ID PL3000 UHF handhelds. Data can be directly transmitted to the central system via GPRS. The RFID handhelds will be used together with a Java-based application software developed by IBM.
