DSV improves customer service
DSV Domestic, the Finnish subsidiary of the Danish logistics and transport group DSV, has purchased an overall solution from Nordic ID and TeliaSonera in which mobile handhelds are used in the Mobile Gate network. This solution will speed up customer service functions and improve real-time tracking of deliveries at DSV. Altogether, this solution covers about two hundred Nordic ID PL3000 handhelds equipped with terminal and remote management programs that use the 3G/GPRS network. The handhelds are supplied by Procomponent Oy.
CUSTOMER SERVICE FUNCTIONS
Constant development of customer service functions is a principal goal of DSV. Being up to date is an absolute necessity. The flow of information between offices situated in different parts of the country and the general data system needs to be flexible. The Cargo Link database of DSV enables utilizing new external devices and software as it is now.
Using mobile devices to read barcodes and to quickly and flawlessly track and sign was a logical solution for DSV. Nordic ID PL3000 handheld computers have been purchased for all DSV Domestic terminals, and through GPRS technology they are in contact with the corporate operational system. Tracking and signing deliveries is managed quickly and flawlessly with the readers. The new system makes the flow of information substantially easier and improves real-time tracking of deliveries via the Internet.
DSV did not want to build just a local area network since the aim was to guarantee the use of mobile devices regardless of where you are. “The Mobile Gate by Sonera turned out to be an ideal solution for us,” notes Tom Sergelius, IT Director at DSV.
SONERA MOBILE GATE
Employees at DSV are able to safely access the local area network wirelessly with the Mobile Gate by Sonera. The terminal equipment used may be handhelds but also laptops and mobile phones, and installing separate software is not needed. GPRS/EDGE/UMTS connections that operate over the Internet through a secured connection can be used as forms of remote connection. The service is suited to companies of all sizes and includes user identification, management and maintenance of user IDs, telephone network connections, service standards and customer terminal equipment when needed. ”TeliaSonera offers and develops service packages for mobile communications management that are ready for use for the needs of system integrators and end users. The modules can be managed easily and they offer a safe and wireless connection. The solutions are best suited to users who need advanced mobility and communication features to be able to serve their customers more efficiently. A good example is the transportation company DSV. The transport industry is one of our primary customer groups, in which our solutions improve customer productivity and organization efficiency. Budgeting the solutions is also easy since their pricing is based on a fixed user-specific monthly payment,” explains Olof Joos, Vice President of TeliaSonera Integrated Enterprise Services division.
NORDIC ID PL3000
Nordic ID PL3000 is a modern mobile terminal device in which barcode reader features and modern network features are brought together. The operating system in PL3000 is Windows CE, which makes it possible to utilize open software interfaces and ready software. The PL3000 devices at DSV are equipped with Naurtec terminal software, which connect quickly via 3G/GPRS with the Cargolink database. The software offers mobile users the same functionality that workstation users have.
In the first stage, DSV will take about two hundred PL3000 devices into use. The remote managing of the devices (instruction, program updates, etc.) is flexible because the terminal device has a NetOp remote management program already installed. The remote management can thus be included in the Sonera Mobile Gate service.
The Nordic ID handhelds can also be updated to utilize UHF RFID remote identification technology. “Utilizing quick 3G connections in companies’ mobile devices is today’s reality. The solution at DSV that utilizes the Mobile Gate by Sonera and modern handhelds is a significant new practical implementation in logistics services,” points out Atte Kaskihalme, Sales Director at Nordic ID.
The most important criteria at DSV for choosing Nordic ID PL3000 handhelds were ease of use, long standby time (up to 10 h with extra battery), domestic origin (repair service in Finland), readiness for delivery - even at short notice - and the high proficiency of the manufacturer and supplier. However, what was decisive was that both the manufacturer and the seller understand the logistics business and that both are ready to develop the product and software further according to the needs at DSV,” states Tom Sergelius.
