To celebrate their 125th Anniversary, the Finnish bookstore Akateeminen Kirjakauppa launches a new deposit solution for reusable canvas bags for their customers as well as renews their packaging material.

“During our Anniversary year, we want to take a leap towards more sustainable development and offer our customers alternatives to the traditional plastic bag”, says Anne Kariniemi, CEO of Akateeminen Kirjakauppa. ”This is the kind of innovative solution that supports our target to offer our customers new services for sustainable consumption as well as enhances the customer experience.”

The reusable canvas bag is available at the cashier for a 3€ deposit. The deposit is refunded when the customer returns the bag to the store. A soiled bag can also be exchanged for a clean one. The new look has been designed by artist Ville Andersson. He has also renewed the look of Akateeminen Kirjakauppa’s other packaging material as well as their plastic and paper bags.

The solution guarantees that the personnel at Akateeminen Kirjakauppa can always offer customers clean and intact reusable canvas bags. Lindström Oy provides the solution, and delivers as well as upkeeps the bags. Nordic ID provides the software platform and the RFID devices (Radio Frequency IDentification). The devices collect data from tags attached to every bag and send it to the cloud. The tag information tells Lindström when each bag has been manufactured and how many times it has been washed.

“We work closely together with Lindström to digitalize their textile services. The Akateeminen Kirjakauppa solution is a great example of sustainable development meeting modern IoT-technology”, says Juuso Lehmuskoski, Vice President of Services and Solutions at Nordic ID. “Our goal is to create solutions for our customers that reduce the amount of wasted resources”, Lehmuskoski continues.

Lindström wants to ensure that the canvas bags are used for as long as possible. Lindström’s and Akateeminen’s goal is to circulate 10 000 reusable bags during the first year.

”Our target is that every single reusable bag will be washed 50 times”, says Sales Manager Ilkka Eskola at Lindström. “Washing 10 000 bags in our low emission laundries saves 33 000 kilos of CO2 in comparison to if the bags were washed at home. This equals a 277 777 kilometer drive in a car or roughly six laps around the world! In addition, we use recycled and refined water in our washing process and always wash full machines, which saves 2,8 million glasses of drinking water compared to washing the bags at home”, Eskola concludes.

Nordic ID’s solutions for real-time tracking of assets flows and location of items promote sustainability. The solutions support customers to manage their production count, to optimize their stocks and to streamline their logistical processes. Nordic ID’s cloud platform Radea generates analytics that enable business decisions and forecasts regarding optimal item flow and count. These insights regarding each company’s right amounts will help save natural resources.
