You can contact our service technicians in Finland via phone +358 2 727 7791 or via email service@nordicid.com
How high are the shipping costs when the device was repaired under warranty?
Standard shipments of repaired devices from the Nordic ID service centre to the customer are included in Warranty repairs / EasyService.

Customers are responsible of cost generated from shipping device(s) to the Nordic ID service centre.

Are any fixed repair costs offered?
No, there are no fixed repair costs offered as each defective device must be inspected individually.
Are there any additional inspection-/refusal fees for creating cost estimate?
Yes, if you do not wish to confirm our cost estimate we will only charge 40,00 € net for inspecting the main device excl. any return shipment costs to the customer. This cost is for examining/diagnosing the device and for creating the cost estimate accordingly. If Nordic ID recycles the unit by request from customer, no fees are charged.

Inspection fee won’t be invoiced in case cost estimate is accepted and repair is performed

How can I use LLRP with Nordic ID devices?
LLRP is the acronym of ‘Low Level Reader Protocol’, ratified by EPC Global in April, 2007. LLRP is the RFID-aware protocol that is intended to standardise the network interface of the RFID readers. It is designed as a standard in order for developers to have a common programmatic interface to RFID readers from different vendors.

Since the Nordic ID devices can only be accessed using the NUR API or NUR protocol to communicate with them, Nordic ID created Norma to provide also LLRP communication for the reader. Norma is available for free as an embedded app on Nordic ID Smart Readers and as a software application for Windows OS.

Norma acts as a translator proxy between the LLRP clients (your middleware or software) and the Nordic ID RFID readers i.e. it translates the LLRP communication to NUR protocol and vice versa. This way LLRP clients can access the reader.

Nordic ID FR22

Hardware features
The Nordic ID FR22 is powered only via PoE. What if my LAN is not PoE?
No problem. Nordic ID is also providing a PoE power supply to power the Nordic ID FR22 using a standard power plug. This PoE power supply also includes an Ethernet connector, so you can still connect the Nordic ID FR22 to your non-PoE LAN.
What is a SMA-RP antenna port?
Nordic ID AR readers had SMA antenna ports. SMA is a very common connector, and it was also used for WLAN and 3G antennas.
Nordic ID FR22 has SMA-RP (reverse polarization) ports. They look almost identical than SMA ports, but they are different to the ports used for WLAN, Bluetooth and 4G (all these are SMA), so that there is no possibility of plugging a wrong cable to the wrong port. Nordic ID can also supply cables with SMA-RP connectors.
Can I play audio via the HDMI port?
The HDMI port is only video output.
Can I connect a touchscreen to Nordic ID FR22?
Yes, you can. The touchscreen shall be connected via HDMI and USB. USB is used to detect the touch and you can configure it using the FR22 web UI.
Software features
The Nordic ID AR readers were already smart readers. Why is the new FR22 different?
Although the Nordic ID AR devices integrated a smart platform based on Linux, the new Nordic ID FR22 is a complete platform itself. That’s why it’s not just an RFID reader, but it’s an IoT Edge Gateway. For example, you do not need any drivers when connecting mass storage units, Bluetooth is part of the platform by default, and a HDMI connector enables using displays out of the box.
Does the Nordic ID FR22 support LLRP?
Our Nordic ID Norma LLRP app is still not supported by FR22.
What about ETSI Upper Band?
ETSI Upper Band (9xx MHz) is supported by FR22. It was not supported by the previous AR readers. But remember that this band is only approved in certain European countries, and not in all Europe. If you want to use the ETSI Upper Band, please indicate it when purchasing your FR22 units.
Does the Nordic ID FR22 support MQTT?
IoT devices can act as MQTT brokers (as gateways that gather data from other IoT devices) or as MQTT clients (that send data to MQTT brokers or servers). Nordic ID FR22 can act as an MQTT broker.
Can I use USB HID mode (keyboard emulation) with FR22?
Unfortunately, not. USB can be used as serial communication, using our NUR API, but not as an HID device. You can use our Nordic ID Keyboard Wedge application for Windows if you wan to use FR22 as a keyboard.
Extension modules and kits
I need to connect more than four antennas. How many antenna ports does the Nordic ID FR22 have?
The Nordic ID FR22 itself has four antenna ports. However, there is a variant of Nordic ID FR22 with 16 antenna ports. In fact, thanks to its modular design, you can now expand your 4-ports Nordic ID FR22 to a 16-ports version by adding the antenna extender module.
Is that “antenna extender module” a conventional antenna multiplexer?
The functionality is the same, but its implementation is much more advanced, as it’s plugged directly into the Nordic ID FR22 via its expansion port, without cables, making the 16-ports a one-piece device, not a 4-ports device + multiplexer.
How different is the beamforming antenna of the Nordic ID FR22 BFA compared to the Nordic ID AR85?
There are 28 beams in the antenna inside the BFA compared to 13 in AR85. They have an oval radiation shape instead or circular, and they are tilted at steps of 15°, instead of only at 40°. All this translates into a higher control of the RFID coverage and a better adaptation in different environments.
Can I still connect external antennas to the Nordic ID FR22 BFA as I could to AR85?
Yes. In fact you can connect up to 4 external antennas to the Nordic ID FR22 BFA.
Compatibility with other Nordic ID fixed readers
I have many projects with Nordic ID AR installed. Shall I replace all the devices?
Don’t worry. We will provide support and repair service for the Nordic ID AR family until July 2027. Moreover, the support for their API will continue, as the new Nordic ID FR22 uses the same API.
I deployed a solution using Nordic ID AR62 (or AR82 or AR85). Can I use the Nordic ID FR22 in this same solution without changing anything?
Yes, you can. The communication interfaces are the same and the programming libraries (API) are the same, so you won’t have to change anything. There are only a few exceptions described along this document.
I have been communicating with Nordic ID AR readers using USB. Will this still work with Nordic ID FR22?
From software perspective, yes, it will. But you will have to use a different USB cable, as Nordic ID FR22 has a USB-C connector instead of USB-A as in Nordic ID AR62, AR82 and AR85.
My solution with Nordic ID AR62 (or AR82) is configured to not read tags at the maximum distance, but in a defined reading range. Will I have to re-configure something when using Nordic ID FR22?
Unfortunately, yes. The Nordic ID FR22 has more transmission power and it is more sensitive than the previous Nordic ID AR readers, so it will probably detect tags at larger reading distance.
I have developed several applications that are embedded on the Nordic ID AR reader and executed by the internal smart platform. Will my applications still work in the Nordic ID FR22?
Although it’s difficult to guarantee that all the apps will work out of the box, there is a support for legacy apps within the Nordic ID FR22. The RFID (NUR) API is the same, but the REST API (system API) is completely new. So, before developing a new app, it’s worth to try your existing ones.
